Jose Mourinho has hinted Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga will stay in the Tottenham starting line-up after their impressive performances against Aston Villa.

The duo were surprise starters on Sunday as Spurs looked to bounce back from damaging back-to-back defeats, which they did by beating Villa 2-0 thanks to goals from Carlos Vinicius and Harry Kane.

Rodon and Tanganga were both faultless at the back. The latter looked especially adept given he was playing out of position at right-back – his natural role is in the heart of the defence.

And speaking after the game, Mourinho suggestrf he will need to call upon hungry players between now and the end of the season, before name-checking Rodon and Tanganga.

“My thinking was we need angry people, we need fresh and positive feelings,” said Mourinho (via Football London). “We need kids on the bench that live a dream, kids that if you play them 10 seconds, they play them like the last seconds of their career. I need people on the pitch that I know the match is really important for them. Tanganga and Rodon are these kind of players.”

There is an argument to be made that Rodon and Tanganga should have been starting more games this season. They have both made defensive mistakes, but minutes breed confidence.

With Eric Dier struggling for form and Davinson Sanchez looking a bit shaky, surely Rodon will partner Toby Alderweireld in coming matches.

Meanwhile, Matt Doherty wasn’t even on the bench at Villa, so Tanganga could be rotated with Serge Aurier at right-back for the remainder of the campaign.
